Rationale:
American history is the central theme presented in a fifth grade social studies curriculum and this unit is a dedication to the American Civil War Era(1860-1865). Students will be introduced to various resource materials pertaining to the events leading up to (the cause of) the war, life during the war, and the wars aftermath, resulting in the reconstruction of the once divided nation. Students will learn the important political figures,key events, and major battles that took place during this critical time period of American history. Through the use of textbooks, primary resource documents, trade books, and the internet, students will master the core content of the civil war for the fifth grade.
